Follies Trust are delighted to announce that grant has been received from the Heritage Council, also the BHIScheme from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage distributed through Kildare County Council and Naas Union of Parishes. This will enable the Trust to complete phase 2 of the project to conserve the cast iron doors of the pyramid mausolea in Maudlins burial ground, Naas.

These pics show current condition of doors

In 2020 Follies Trust completed the conservation of these two fine mausolea [please see Projects 2019-20 with photos and webinar about the conservation work]. These pics below show work in progress on east pyramid in August 2020 and west pyramid completed.

The project to conserve the doors has already gone out to tender and Bushy Park Ironworks was the successful company and have been appointed. This is great news – we will keep our website updated on progress!

September 2021 Update

The conservation of the doors was completed in August 2021. Bushy Park Ironworks retained as much as possible of the original doors and inserted mortice locks dating from c. 1840 (same date as pyramids).

On 19 August the Follies Trust formally handed over the keys of the pyramids to the Reverend Philip Heak, Rector of Naas Union of Parishes. Leas Cathaoirleach, local representatives and funders were present- See report and photographs in local newspaper

On 10 September Minister of State for Housing & Heritage, Malcolm Noonan, came to see the completed project. His last visit was in September 2020 when scaffolding was still up on the East pyramid. The Minister was delighted with the project and spent time hearing details of the work from the contractors and Bushy Park Ironworks apprentice, Olly.
