Lecture on the Gate Lodges of Ireland held on 23 October 2019 by J.A.K. Dean

Dean kindly agreed to give his lecture on The Gate Lodges of Ireland to the Follies Trust in Belfast. Earlier in 2019 Dean gave this lecture in Dublin and it was greatly enjoyed.

This lecture was held in St Thomas’ Church of Ireland, Eglantine Avenue, Belfast (junction with Lisburn Road) at 7.15pm on Wednesday 23 October.

It was a wonderful lecture – please see flyer here.

Visit by the Follies Trust to St. Anne’s Park Clontarf on Saturday 31 August

Led by Park Superintendent, Brid Brosnan, and conservation architect, Fergal McNamara, over thirty members from the Follies Trust had a wonderful visit to see the Follies in St Anne’s. Congratulations were passed on to all concerned in Dublin City Council for the careful conservation of the follies. A decade ago they were in poor repair but now they add a special dimension to St Anne’s Park for the enjoyment of all visitors.

The Follies Trust’s strapline is ‘follies are joyful buildings which aim to please’. The Follies in St Anne’s are a perfect match for this quote.

Lecture by Dr Finbar McCormick on Mausolea & Memorials

The Follies Trust 2019 events began with a lecture by Dr Finbar McCormick on Mausolea & Memorials to the dead in Ireland on 13 March at 7.30pm. His talk looked at the history and development of memorials to the dead in Ireland and beyond.

Finbar’s lecture was linked with our next project – conservation of the Murland mausoleum located in the graveyard of Clough Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church, County Down, where the lecture took place. The Follies Trust raised funds to conserve the magnificent Murland mausoleum over the summer.
